Is a very very very fine House…
It all started Memorial Day Weekend over breakfast with friends in the mountains. Our friends, Kelly & Rob, told us about how they were getting their house painted & a new roof put on. REF and I have needed to paint the house for over a year. We commiserated with our friends on how expensive house projects can be, but they said the company doing the work for them was actually pretty reasonable. When the weekend was over we decided to give Kelly and Rob’s roofer/painter a call.
Well, after speaking with the foreman, lots of chats about the numbers and several discussions on Twitter about roof colors, paint colors, etc. We decided to bite the bullet and update the house. We started with a new roof. Lots of people suggested a light color for the energy savings they provide, but I just really liked the look of a black roof! Then after a lot of inspiration from Pinterest I decided on grey siding, black shutters and white trim. Here’s a side picture of the house with the new roof & new paint.
We were also in desperate need of new front doors so prior to even calling the roofer we ordered doors. I decided that I definitely wanted a pop of color, but I didn’t want red doors. I took some inspiration from The Yellow Front Door and picked a pretty shade of yellow to paint them. Well… Since they were a special order we had wait for what seemed like FOR-FREAKING-EVER. They finally came in & were installed, but they were damaged slightly during shipping. After some back and forth with the big box home improvement store we got the doors refunded in full and thanks to my persistence we are also getting NEW doors. So… I haven’t painted the new doors yellow, but here’s a picture of what they look like white.
We also replaced the light fixtures which I’ve been wanting to do since REF moved into this house five years ago. Here’s an up close of the light fixtures. You can see what looks like a post it note on the bottom of the old doors. That’s basically the color that we are going to paint the new doors.
So, after having all this pretty new paint on the house we realized that we really needed to take care of the hazard that was our back deck. The folks who had put it on really didn’t know what they were doing when they installed it and REF had never once sealed it in five years of living here. So, we negotiated on the price and then we did some price comparisons. We realized that we were getting a pretty good deal and told them to go ahead start the deck. That was on the Friday night of the 4th of July weekend. Well, on Saturday morning at 7:00am we had a knock on the door. It was the deck people and they were working on the holiday weekend. 48 hours later we had a new deck. I wasn’t fast enough to get a before shot, but I did get a during shot & several finished shots.
We absolutely LOVE our new paint, roof, deck and doors. I’ll update later when the doors are finally painted. Once that happens I think I’ll actually feel like this project is done.
Sorry the pictures are so linear. I couldn’t figure out the formatting to get them side by side and centered. This is definitely a learning process!

They look great! Can’t wait to see the paint.
Thanks for all your help! I can’t wait to see the yellow doors either. I basically lost my cool over the delay of the doors, but at least I got free ones out of it!
Looks fantastic! Wow, what a dramatic change – I had no idea a roof and doors could do that! Your hard work has paid off!
Thanks! I’m really looking forward to having the doors painted. I think it will bring it all together.
I really love the new look! It is so inviting and I know y’all must be enjoying it all so much! Great job!
Wow! What an amazing difference just a few tweaks made! Ian and I would like to paint our entire (brick) house at some point and also go with a darker roof. And replace our front doors. I really need to talk to you and get your contractor’s name!
I’ll tell you all about him next week at dinner! I’m in love with the new look of the house.
Hi! I came across your house on pinterest and love it! We also have a rancher style house that I want to paint. Do you know what paint colour you used for the grey siding? Thanks so much!
