Charlotte

Weekend Whereabouts

by KT on January 21, 2013

I had a really low key, but fun & productive weekend.  Friday night I headed over after work  to a local mexican restaurant to celebrate one of my friend’s second pregnancies.  Rachel  & Michelle organized a small group of Charlotte girls for a diapers & wipes shower for Ashley.  Ashley is due just two weeks before me!  It was surprise for Ashley & her face when she walked into the restaurant was classic.  It was a really great night out.  The only thing I missed was a big fat margarita. ;)

Saturday REF slept in, which is something that he NEVER does.  He’s been trying to get over a cold that has been hanging on for about 2 weeks now.  He clearly needed the sleep.   After our slow start to the morning, we ran a few errands.  One of those errands was to The Container Store.  A few weeks ago we had the folks at the Container Store sketch out a closet design for the baby’s room & Saturday we pulled the trigger.  It will look something like this:

elfaGirlsCloset_xl

It is being installed on Wednesday & I could not be happier.  REF & I were laughing that our lives have become so dull that we are excited about a closet system (one that isn’t even for us), but this is where life has taken us.

Later that evening we decided to go see Silver Linings Playbook.  Something I’m not sure I’ve shared on here yet is that REF & I love to go to the movies.  It’s always been a fun date night for us.  I realize we don’t have many of these spontaneous movie nights left so even though we were both tired we stood in line for the movie.

If you haven’t seen this movie, do.  I absolutely loved it.  I know I’m emotional because of pregnancy hormones, but I was laughing & crying during this whole thing.  I don’t normally like Bradley Cooper, but he was amazing.  Jennifer Lawrence was perfect.  Robert De Niro & Jacki Weaver played their roles spot on.  Take the time to see this one in theater if you can.

After the movie we decided to get a bite to eat at the Mellow Mushroom across from the theater.  We never go eat out late anymore (9:30), but again…we’re trying to soak it all in.  We were pleasantly surprised that they had live music & it ended up being a really nice evening out.

Sunday morning, we did early church, breakfast, and napped.  After our naps we hung some new blinds in the baby’s room, our bedroom/bathroom.  I then decided that I needed to wash/iron our curtains and both of the bathroom shower curtains.  I guess we can attribute that to “nesting”, but who really knows.  I’m pleased with the new blinds in our bedroom & I think they look really fresh in the baby’s room, especially with the curtains we got for her.

What did you do this weekend?

What’s on my Phone?

by KT on June 13, 2012

Also titled: I’m at a loss for content

I still haven’t found my camera battery charger, but if we’re being honest I’ve not really looked too hard for it.  In the meantime how about a little phone photo post?

Also,  are you following me on Instagram?  You should, my username is KTBFerg.

My girlfriend’s driveway is lined by the most beautiful hydrangeas you’ve ever seen.  She was out of town while they were in full bloom & I begged asked if I could cut a few to have.  I ended up coming home with a HUGE basket of flowers.  I just threw the last of them away this Sunday.  They ended up lasting 3 weeks!

Prior to the personal trainer cracking the whip on our diet REF & I tried out a pizza on the grill recipe his sister had told us about.  All I have to say about this is – amazing.

So by now most of the blog/twitter world is well versed in the amazing world of Bridier Baubles, but since a fair number of people who read my blog are NOT bloggers themselves I’ll let you in on a little secret: this jewelry is addictive.  In the picture above I’m modeling wearing the Britta Beads.  Today I’m wearing the Luxe Link in tortoise & yesterday I was wearing The Coco Necklace in snow.  The absolute best thing about this stuff is that the price point makes it a perfect gift choice!

One week after I stole picked the blue hydrangeas from my girlfriend’s house my neighbor knocked on the door with this GIANT bucket of pink & purple hydrangeas!  She asked if I wanted any, because her bushes were making too many to keep for just her!  Have I told you how much I love my neighbors?!  They are STILL holding up quite well going on week number 3!

So, since we’ve committed to this fitness thing I’ve also made sure I’ve committed to the nutrition side of it too.  This is a pretty accurate picture of my breakfast daily.  I do eat plain or vanilla Greek yogurt too for the protein.  It’s been awesome to just stock up on a bunch of this stuff at the Farmer’s Market each weekend.

I bet my mom readers will recognize what this is!  I found my nephew’s baby shoe under the backseat of car.  His poor mom’s been looking around for the missing mate for a couple weeks.

Last Saturday morning I woke up to find this Bee dead on my patio table.  I mentioned the Bee Apocalypse to REF & he had no idea what I was talking about.  Am I the only nerd that keeps up with this kind of thing?  Also, I’ve always called this type of Bee a Wood Bee (per my dad).  I recently learned that the correct term would be a Carpenter Bee.

We were outside on the deck when we found the victim of the Bee Apocalypse to do our daily workout.  I had just laid out my yoga mat and was grabbing my phone to use as a timer when someone took over my mat to practice his downward facing dog.  Honestly, my dog could not get any cuter!

That’s it folks!

Refreshing Weekend

by KT on April 23, 2012

I almost left town on Friday after work to go see my nephew, but I decided I needed to stay in town & get a few things done.  I ended up having such a nice weekend.  While I’m sad that I didn’t get some QT with my favorite little guy I think my body is glad I stayed in town.

Friday night REF & I went to watch The Bobcats play the Memphis Grizzles.  We used my company’s corporate tickets and parking pass.  The seats and service are great, but The Bobcats are working hard on becoming the worst NBA team in HISTORY!  Our seats are directly behind the bench (where the owner, Michael Jordan, sits) & so we could hear everything the players and coaches were saying.  It was hard to watch them trying so hard, but still come out losers.  It still was a fun night & I recommend going to a game if you’re in town.

On Saturday morning I went to meet a group of blog/twitter friends.   Christian was in town from Memphis & so we all decided to meet up at Pewter Rose to welcome her to Charlotte!  In the picture above… From L to R you have Lauren, Adelaide, Christian, April, me & Annie.  We were surrounded on both sides by bridal parties which was pretty fun!

Thanks for putting this together, April!  It was so nice to brunch with you ladies!

After brunch I headed out to do some shopping for the weekend.  REF & I are heading out in a couple days to Kiawah Island, SC for my college roomie’s wedding.   We’ll be staying here at the Cassique Club Cottages with other members of the The cottages come with bikes & porches.  I’m looking forward to early morning rides & afternoon cocktails on the porch!  REF’s going to do a little golfing while I’m doing bridesmaids stuff so I think we’ll both be happy campers by the end of the weekend!

I ordered this Elizabeth McKay dress from Rue La La in spicy orange on April 12.  I thought that I would wear it to the rehearsal dinner.  Unfortunately, it STILL hasn’t shipped.  So, I’m on to plan B.  What is plan B?  Well, I haven’t figured that out yet.  I searched high & low this weekend to find a suitable dress that fulfills my requirements of being a classic design with a little fun, having both sleeves & structure, and is long enough that I can sit down & not be worried that I’m showing too much leg.  Everything I tried on was too slinky or too short.

Hopefully I can find something by Wednesday.  If not, I’ll be shopping my closet!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Where Have I Been?!

by KT on April 19, 2012

Sometimes I don’t blog because I haven’t uploaded pictures.  Sometimes I don’t blog because I have don’t have much to talk about.  Sometimes I don’t blog because it feels forced.  Sometimes I don’t blog because I’m lazy. Sometimes I don’t blog because I’m busy.  This past silence has been a combination of all of the above.

So, what have I been up to?

I went to visit this guy, his mom and his dad to celebrate his 6 month birthday!  We played in this jumping thing, ate rice cereal, went on a walk sitting up in the stroller & read a bunch of books.

We celebrated MK’s 30th Birthday complete with a surprise visit from her NYC friends, a spa day, cookout & a party bus!

This is her face when her NYC friend walked into the garage to surprise her!

REF & I celebrated Easter with my parents & had a low key day.  We ate a wonderful brunch, hit golf balls, planted flowers, watched The Masters & had an amazing dinner.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take 1 picture!  It was a much needed break.

We also celebrated MK’s baby’s baptism last weekend.  The service was lovely & they had over 60 family and friends join them at their house for a BBQ.  Like always, REF & I stayed over too late & had too much fun!  We sure do love having them in CLT now!

What have you been up to?

Wednesday Winesday Blogger Meet up

by KT on March 22, 2012

Wednesday night April organized a Charlotte ladies blogger meet up at Arooji’s wine room.  They run a special for a tasting of 3 wines & an appetizer for $14.95.  The appetizer was HUGE & definitely sufficed for a meal.  The folks at the restaurant were definitely accommodating to deal with loud girls!

I had met a handful of these girls in person, but not everyone.  It was was such a fun night & I was so glad that I decided to go!  After every one of these meet ups I’m more and more glad that I do this whole blogging deal.

It’s amazing how quickly I’ve found conversation to be with other bloggers.  We were a little nerdy & went around the table to introduce ourselves, tell folks our blog name, twitter handle, home town, job, our favorite blogs that weren’t represented that evening, etc.  Christina even took notes to send out to the group which had me cracking up.

I imagine that a lot of these meet ups could be awkward or weird, but I have yet to have that experience with any of my meet ups!

Once again Charlotte ended up being a small town & I realized I had some mutual friends with some of these girls.  I LOVE that about the blog community.  It definitely makes the 6 degrees of separation seem real.

The whole group

Back Row – Left to Right: Me, April, Annie, Kate, Sara, Jordan, Maren, Lulu

Front Row – Left to Right: Michelle, Christina, Sarah and Dee

I cannot thank April enough for putting this night together.  It was a great mid-week break!  If you’re in Charlotte, a blogger, and want to come next time let me know, because we plan on doing these more frequently!

Girls Night Out

by KT on March 14, 2012

Last Thursday I met Classic Annie  & April out of drinks.  We decided to meet at a fairly new wine bar/coffee house type place in Myers Park called Fabo Cafe.    It was a great location since two of us live in southpark and one works in southpark n& lives uptown.  So, it wasn’t a long drive home for anyone.

Fabo is basically a coffee house, wine/beer bar, local art store all in one.  When I walked in I immediately felt like it was a shop in Boone.  It definitely has an identity crisis, but somehow it works.

April had heard of a deal where on Thursday nights they would do a wine tasting for $10 or you can apply that $10 to a bottle of wine.  Sounded great to me!  So, after having to listen to the ins & outs of all the different flavors of the wine we were finally situated at a table outside.

We had such a nice time.  It was good to talk about work, marriage, weddings, babies & just laugh.  This whole blogging thing is a little strange and wacky sometimes, but thinking about how it has brought so many people into my life it definitely makes it worth it.

This is picture of me is hideous, but super cute of the other ladies so I figured I’d include it!

25 Years in Charlotte

by KT on February 3, 2012

First off I’m sorry for my absence from the blog.  At first I was just being lazy about uploading pictures, then I had a crazy week at work and now I’m fighting a head cold. All great excuses, I know.

Pittsburgh, PA - Picture from Google Images

Anyhow, my mom posted this morning on FB that 25 years ago today we moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Charlotte, NC.  I knew we moved in February, but I guess it never dawned on me to ask the exact date.   I was 5 years old when we moved and I remember being extremely excited.  I can just barely recall my parents telling my sister and me that we were moving from to Charlotte, NC.  We were in our old family room & there was some speech, but it ended in them telling us we were going to live in the south.  I remember jumping up and down and being thrilled about the idea of living somewhere new.  Not because I  didn’t like Pittsburgh, but because I was 5 and that’s how 5 year olds think.  We did live in a beautiful area   of Pittsburgh and I didn’t know how lucky we actually were to call that home.  Heck, some of our notable neighbors were Bill Cowher, Teresa Heinz Kerry and David Newell (the mailman from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood – I actually assumed he was our mailman too.  It’s okay to be jealous of my smarts).

When we moved to Charlotte we had to say Charlotte, North Carolina, because no one knew where this “new south city” was located.  A lot of people would say stuff like “Oh, Charlottesville…”.  No, not Charlottesville, that’s located in Virginia.  There’s a major university located there people.  Then people would often say “I love Charleston…”.  Again, Charleston is located in South Carolina and that city is on the water.  I guess this still happens to an extent.  A few years ago I was a recruiter for a small private University located in Charlotte.  I traveled to college fairs and High School in TN, WVA, OH and PA.  Often people would say the same things.

I guess when we arrived in Charlotte in 1987 things were quite different.  The public school system was a mess. The city was growing too quickly and had serious growing pains. There was an aversion to people like my parents (yankees) with their children (gd yankees).  People drove four hours away to Atlanta to go shopping.  Some may argue that things are still the same 30 years later.  I would say, however, that our city is a great city with beautiful trees, welcoming people and great shopping.

Charlotte, NC - Picture from Google Images

It should be noted that I did a google image search for the Charlotte skyline in 1987 and came up with nada.

When I was in college I visited a lot of different parts of the state that I had never seen before.  I often times found myself thinking how stinking beautiful our state was.   I’m sure other people think their state is beautiful, but North Carolina is definitely something special.  We have the mountains, beaches , and the rolling hills of the piedmont.  We have GREAT public universities with serious basketball history.  Who your ACC team is says a lot about the person that you are.

There are times when I get the itch to move somewhere different or more exotic.  I should clarify that exotic to REF and me would be some place like, let’s say Chicago or Austin.  Don’t get carried away, okay.   The bottom line though is that we’ll probably stay in Charlotte, because we love it here and this city is our home.

Let the Celebrations Begin!

by KT on December 22, 2011

Today I’ll be counting down the minutes to 5:00pm a little bit more then normal, because my college roommates will reunited tonight for our annual Holiday Extravaganza!  My friend, MTV & her husband JM who live in Denver, CO. have been in North Carolina all week visiting with MTV’s family.  I don’t get to see them that often so I’m glad to have them here.  Heck, I’m glad to just have them on EST.  It’s been great to text & video message without the fears of waking someone up!

L to R: MTV, ME, KM & SW

It is also JM’s birthday, so my fellow Charlottean, KM & I thought it would be fun to head to Pacos Tacos for dinner.

SW, MTV & JM will be spending the night so REF & I whipped up a breakfast casserole to serve on Friday morning.  REF also offered to run out to Sbux to make sure everyone had coffee in the morning.

On Friday my office closes at 11:30 & we have a big pot lunch together.  Then we do a dirty santa exchange.  Typically I leave the office around 2:00.  I’m crossing my fingers that is the case this year too, because I have REF’s dad, step mother, sister, bother in law and niece coming over for dinner around 5:30 or 6:00.  I’m really excited that his dad and step mom were so flexible to come to Charlotte to celebrate Christmas with us.  We put in a lot of miles driving back & forth from Concord & this really might be the best Christmas present I’ll receive from them!

REF’s sister, brother in law & niece are spending the night with use & then we are all heading up to Concord on Saturday morning to celebrate with REF’s mom, step dad and grandmother.  We’re going to do a Christmas Eve brunch so that REF and I can make it back to Charlotte in time for Christmas Eve mass with my parents.

REF, Winston and I will be enjoying some alone time on Christmas Eve night & early Christmas morning. We plan to open 1 present on Christmas Eve together.  On Christmas morning we’re going to head to my parents for breakfast around 10 or so.  We still haven’t decided if we’ll open our presents by ourselves or bring them to my parents.  It’s kind of 6 one way 1/2 dozen the other for me.

After lunch my sister, brother in law & two nephews will arrive at my parent’s house.  I’m so excited to see all of them & squeeze that little baby!

I have a handful of presents left to wrap and a few last minute stocking stuffers to pick up.  Are you ready for the weekend?

Weekend

by KT on December 19, 2011

With less then a week to Christmas I’m JUST starting to feel like it is finally the holidays.  Friday night I had some plans with girlfriends that got rescheduled to next Thursday so I actually had a “free” evening.  We ordered take out, REF played on the computer and I watched Christmas movies on Netflix.  It was actually just what I needed.

Saturday I spend the day finishing up my shopping.  Then I got home and realized I forgot to pick up my MIL’s Christmas gift.  She has a birthday in December & I always forget to get TWO gifts for her.  She’s actually hard to shop for so maybe I just put it off! Oh well, I’ll be heading back to the mall this week to get her gift.  Maybe it will just be a bunch of men there so I can zip in and out.  Wishful thinking? Probably.

Saturday night REF and I headed to our friend’s house for dinner.  We were actually quite shocked to be invited to this couple’s house.  They aren’t the best at reciprocating hospitality.  They are our dear friends, but I just don’t think that type of thing crosses their mind.  We had nice dinner and I got home before it was too late…which is my kind of dinner party.

Sunday we had a busy, but fun day.  We headed to Concord for lunch with REF’s mom, Grandma, Aunt & Cousin.  After lunch we all went to see REF’s niece in The Nutcracker!  She is a member of a Kannapolis dance troupe & every year they do The Nutcracker with the Salisbury Symphony.  It is quite beautiful, but a bit of drive for REF and me.

Abby was a mouse and a gum drop this year.  It was great to be able to see her more then once.  In years past she’s had smaller roles so we didn’t get to see her too much.  I hope that she continues with dance through out the years, because I do like seeing this performance year after year.

I do not know who the creeper is in the background.  :)

After the performance we raced home, I changed my clothes and hopped back in the car to head over to Rachel’s house for a (I hope) annual blogger ornament exchange!  I had such a nice time and finally got to meet some folks who I’ve “talked” to for over 6 months!  It really got me in the Christmas spirit.  i got the cutest ornament and had a chance to really catch up with people.

Unfortunately, I forgot my camera at home for both the nutcracker and the ornament exchange.  Hopefully, folks will email out the pictures they took so that I can post them!

Thanksgiving Eve Wine & Cheese

by KT on December 7, 2011

On Thanksgiving Eve my mom and dad decided to have a little open house for wine and cheese.  My sister, brother in law, nephew and grandparents were all going to be in town so it was a perfect time for our family friends to see everyone.

They had several stations of drinks and food set up on the main floor & in the basement.

As my mom and Nana rushed around putting the finishing touches on the tables my grandpa sat back and relaxed.

The basement had even more food and drinks set up.

The weather was SO nice that my parents had the outside set up in case anyone wanted to head outdoors.

Charlie was dressed in a cute new outfit my mom found for him.

Doesn’t my sister look fantastic?

My best friend was able to swing by with her husband and baby Jack before they headed to the airport to pick up her in-laws.  It was such a treat for me to hold my two favorite babies at one time!

Before the party was over we decided to have Charlie and Jack hang out on the couch together.

There were about 60 or so people that stopped by and everyone had a wonderful time.  I hope this becomes a tradition, because it was a nice easy way to catch up with friends.
